LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shannen Doherty, the actress who starred as Brenda Walsh on the hit television series "Beverly Hills 90210" and later Prue Halliwell on "Charmed," has died at the age of 53 after a nearly decade-long battle with breast cancer, her publicist confirmed Tuesday.
Doherty, a child actor who became one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy. She continued to work after her diagnosis, appearing in the "90210" reboot in 2019 and the Netflix series "Heathers" in 2018.
In recent years, Doherty had been open about her cancer journey, sharing her struggles and triumphs with her fans. She was a vocal advocate for cancer awareness and research, and she helped raise millions of dollars for the American Cancer Society.
Doherty is survived by her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, her mother, Rosa, and her brother, Sean. She will be remembered as a talented actress, a brave fighter, and a loving friend and family member.
