S-Bahn Will Go Around Cologne’s Southern Curve to Bonn Central Station via Hürth

West Rhine Railway Is to Be Expanded: S-Bahn Line 13 Is Planned for Completion by 2035

By Rheinische Post

The S-Bahn will soon be operating on the western Rhine railway between Cologne-Süd and Bonn: As part of the expansion of the Cologne S-Bahn network, Deutsche Bahn plans to extend line S13 via Hürth-Kalscheuren to Bonn Central Station.

This means that in the future, passengers will be able to travel from Bonn to Cologne-Ehrenfeld or Cologne Central Station without having to change trains. Implementation is planned for 2035.

There are only a few details still to be clarified: first, the financing and then the planning approval procedure.

The expansion of the S-Bahn network is intended to relieve the strain on the regional rail network and provide passengers with a faster and more convenient connection between the cities of Cologne and Bonn.

The new S-Bahn line will run from Cologne-Süd via Hürth-Kalscheuren, Hürth-Mitte, Hürth-Hermülheim, Frechen-Königsdorf, Frechen-Horrem, Pulheim and Stommeln to Bonn Central Station.

The new S-Bahn stations will be barrier-free and will have lifts and escalators.

The project costs are estimated to be around 1.2 billion euros. The federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will each provide around 500 million euros.

The remaining costs will be borne by Deutsche Bahn.

The go.Rheinland association, which represents the interests of the Cologne/Bonn region, welcomes the expansion of the S-Bahn network as a "milestone for the mobility of the future."

The association's chairman, Stephan Keller, said: "The new S-Bahn line will not only relieve the strain on the regional rail network, but will also make it easier for people to switch from cars to public transport."

Keller also emphasized the importance of the S-Bahn for the economic development of the region.

He said: "The new S-Bahn line will make the Cologne/Bonn region even more attractive for companies and investors."
